New Adventures

I am spending the most amazing weekend in Phoenix at TNNA. It is so wonderful to be around so many fiber arts people. I am loving every second of it.

Sadly it hasn’t all been wonderful. Today was the keynote speech by social media expert Lon Safko. Sadly this was not what I had hoped it would be. While he obviously knew his stuff, he was not prepared for the audience he was talking to. You could tell that no research had been done ahead of time about the demographic he was speaking to. I wish he had geared his presentation towards small business owners, but most of all I wish he had known about Ravelry. You really cannot discuss social media for the needle arts without discussing Ravelry. It is our home base, where we all gather, talk, and share information. It saddened me that Mr. Safko had no knowledge of this amazing website. I spoke with many of the people who attended and they were all just as frustrated. Thankfully there are a few of us out there who know the needle arts industry and can help give social media advice focused towards the needs of this niche group.

Overall it was a wonderful day! I met with lots of people, had some very interesting conversations, and started making some very exciting plans! Looking forward to more of the same the rest of the weekend. Please follow me on Twitter to get updates through out the day!

Happy 2012

Happy New Year everyone!  I am so excited for 2012, it’s going to be a great year! 2011 was a crazy year for me. The most exciting thing that happened in 2011 was the launch of Knit Together Media, also  Winnie The Pooh (my 2nd movie at Disney Feature Animation) was released, I started working at Disney Toon Studios, attended my first needle arts conference, met a bunch of amazing knitters, and generally had a great time.  While 2011 was good, 2012 is going to be GREAT! I spent my holiday break coming up with new ideas and ways to share social media with the fiber arts industry and can’t wait to get going.

First up, I will be starting a monthly newsletter sharing tidbits about social media, planning in social media, how to integrate it into the fiber arts world, and news on the fiber arts community. Many of these topics will also be appearing on my blog through out the year. If you are interested in signing up for the newsletter you can do so here.  The first issue will be going out by the 15th.

Most of this month will be spent prepping for the Winter TNNA show. I am so excited to attend this event and looking forward to hanging out and chatting with lots of people. If you are going to be at TNNA and would like to set-up a meeting to discuss social media and how Knit Together Media can help you please send me an email – barbra (at) knittogethermedia (dot) com.

I hope you all have a wonderful and successful year!

My favorite place back home, an awesome park with a covered bridge. Knights Ferry… so many happy memories!

Moving forward and having fun!

Hello my friends!

Life is so busy and full right now.  December is always that way, but this year even more so with the start of Knit Together Media. I am so grateful for all the wonderful things that have happened this year, and I know I am heading in the right direction.  It’s amazing how life changes, if someone had told me 10 years ago that I would own my own business I would have laughed at them. Back then I was going to be a Stage Manager on Broadway! Or running my own Theatre company! I was (and still am a bit) a Theatre geek through and through… but life changes and through random turn of events I ended up at Walt Disney Feature Animation. Then I was going to make Disney movies for the rest of my life. I was in awe of working for the people who had made the beloved movies I grew up on. It was magical… but as any good Disney employee knows the magic soon fades away.  The problem with both of these career paths was that they took me away from my knitting. Months and months would go by where I was to busy to knit or even look at my yarn. This just didn’t fly with me. Knitting is my zen, it keeps me calm and relieves stress.  So here I am now working to help bring social media marketing to they fiber arts. Finding a way to bring my passion and my career together. I get to spend time in the knitting/fiber arts community and I couldn’t be happier.  It feels right, it feels like where I am supposed to be.

There is lots of work ahead, but I am looking forward to the challenge. Through it all I will have my knitting by my side.

Thank you to all who have helped me get here. I am so eternally grateful.

Social Media and the Yarn Industry

Yesterday I taught my first class on the importance of social media in relation to the yarn industry.  Oh my goodness… we had a blast!  It was a great group of people,  some of who I had met before but there were many new faces which was wonderful. I am hoping to take my presentation and turn it into a little video for you all to check out. Look for that at the beginning of the New Year.

Even though I was there to teach, the class attendees ended up inspiring me so much.  I have so many new ideas and I am very excited about the possibilities of the future. My favorite moment of the day was when one of the attendees told me the reason she wanted to work with me was my passion for yarn and knitting. I was THRILLED with that feedback, it totally made my day.  Knitting is my passion, it is what I love and who I am… I am so grateful there are people in the world who appreciate and understand that.

Thank you so much to everyone who came out in the rain yesterday! I had the best time and I hope you did too!  Hopefully you learned a little something along the way as well.

P.S. I know I failed with NaBloPoMo…. please don’t judge me to harshly!  At least I got 1/2 through right? :-)

New Projects

Oh the knitting is out of control right now!  So many projects… I started two new projects this weekend to add to the 4 projects already on needles. Craziness!

New project #1 is a super chunky cowl/infinity scarf in seed stitch out of Malabrigo chunky…

And the second project is a hat with removable ear flaps, in a lovely pink Cascade 220…

This is all added to the shawl, 2 sweaters, and blanket I am working on.  Also getting ready to start needle felting some ornaments for the Holidays!

Sticks and Stitches
